ARMENIA ::: Explore Ancient Yerevan: 3 Day Tour


Day 01

Airport pick-up, City Tour and History Museum

Upon arriving at the airport, you will be met by your English-speaking tour guide who will help you check-in to your hotel. Once you are ready, your guide will introduce you to Yerevan, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities.

The day starts with a visit to the city’s History Museum and continues with a walking tour of Yerevan, exploring various layers of its past – medieval shrines hidden behind imposing Soviet-style façades, narrow streets of the old center with sunlight playing on its pink walls. You will see the Blue Mosque, Republic Square, Cascade, Mother Armenia, the Opera House and other ambitious projects of independent Armenia such as North Avenue and the Grigor Lusavorich Cathedral.

A cultural showcase not to be missed is Matenadaran, one of the world's oldest repositories of Greek, Persian and Arabic manuscripts. Our next stop is Genocide Memorial situated on the hills overlooking the city, a solemn reminder of the first genocide of the 20th c. A lighter optional excursion to the Ararat Brandy factory is also offered.

Lunch and dinner will be in a local restaurant. Overnight in the hotel in Yerevan (B/L/D)

Day 02

Khor Virap, Noah’s Ark and Ejmiatsin

Day 2 takes you to the Khor-Virap monastery (4th-17th century), a favorite pilgrimage site with breathtaking views across to Turkey and the twin peaks of Mount Ararat. Legend has it that you can see traces of Noah’s Ark in the snows of Ararat.

Next on your tour is Echmiadzin Cathedral – the holy seat of the Supreme Patriarch-Catholicos of all Armenians. The cathedral was built in 303 on the site of a pagan temple after the adoption of Christianity as a state religion in 301. The day also includes a visit to the 7th century St. Hripsime Church and the ruins of the 7th century Temple of Zvartnots.

Day 03

Avan Canyon, Garni and Geghard

Drive along the picturesque Avan Canyon, skirting formidable cliffs and passing exotic-looking gorges until a green plateau by the Azat River comes into view. Here, in the harmony of the relief and the virgin nature you will see the pagan Garni architectural complex of the 1st century and feel the spirit of ancient ages. Another ten minutes ride through the gorge will take you to the cave monastery of Geghard (12th –13th centuries).

After the tour, enjoy free time back in town for individual exploration, shopping and packing.Lunch will be served in a private house in Garni. After lunch drive to Lake Sevan- the Emerald of Armenia and two churches on Sevan Peninusla.

The farewell dinner will be served in a traditional restaurant with national cuisine. Overnight in the hotel in Yerevan. (B/L/D)
